First editions of these 2 volumes, each illustrated with 46 drawings by Harry Furniss. At the end of each volume, 5 pages of Carroll's works and a facsimile of the Alice in Wonderland manuscript. Publisher's full red cloth binding. Smooth spine with gilt titles, gilt medallions on boards depicting characters from the novels. Triple gilt frame on boards. All edges gilt. The Sylvie and Bruno volume uniformly faded, a split at head and foot of a few millimeters, 2 slight depressions on the spine, along the lower joint, cloth worn and opened for a few millimeters; corners turned in, small stains and soiling. A bookseller's label on the pastedown: Serendip books, Dorset. On the half-title, a manuscript inscription in blue ink: Purchase 1972 march, and opposite a signature. The Sylvie and Bruno Concluded volume in fine condition, despite sunken headcaps, a somewhat faded spine and some light soiling. A handsome set in the original publisher's binding, perfectly fresh internally.
