    Contemporary half red shagreen binding with corners. Spine with raised bands richly decorated. Double fillet border on boards. Top edge gilt. Dark spotting to spine of volume 4, one spot on volume 3 and spine of volume 6. Traces of rubbing. Uncut copy.
    Minister to Louis XV, the Count de Maurepas commissioned Pierre de Clairambault, genealogist, to compile all the libertine pieces written under Louis XIV and Louis XV, resulting in 40 volumes. The selection of pieces contained in Poulet-Malassis's collection is attributed to Jules Gay, the latter having judiciously retained only the most libertine, most scandalous and most frivolous pieces, all freed from circumstantial pieces, panegyrics and other idle dissertations. Numerous historical figures appear, portrayed with quite surprising erotic license and treated in an outrageous manner.

    Half brown shagreen binding with corners signed Champs-Stroobant at the top of the endpaper. Smooth spine with mosaic work, decorated with mirrored mosaic tooling in red and black, with Greek key roll borders. Fillet lines on boards. Top edge gilt. Spine uniformly faded. Traces of rubbing.
    Very fresh copy, with original wrappers preserved, uncut paper, full margins.
    Handsome copy.
    Literary hoax in which Bilitis is presented in the translator Pierre Louys's preface as a young Greek woman from the 6th century who would have lived on the island of Lesbos where she would have been Sappho's rival. Pierre Louys pushed the hoax so far as to create false bibliographic references, and a large part of the critics were deceived by it. Debussy set 3 of these pieces to music as early as 1897. The poems and songs trace the life of a young virgin, her first erotic stirrings and her sapphic loves.

    Contemporary half red shagreen binding. Spine with raised bands decorated with compartments with triple fillets. Signs of rubbing. 2 corners slightly bumped. Occasional foxing.
    Les destinées contains 11 pieces, 7 of which were published from January 15, 1843 to January 15, 1864 in the Revue des deux mondes. The last piece in the collection, L'esprit pur, was written 14 days before the author's death. This is one of the most important poetic collections of the 19th century for the formal organization of its poems. While the rhetoric and narration are still Romantic, Vigny's bold innovations herald Symbolism.

    The most complete early edition, and the last, partly in first edition, before that produced in 1857 by Antoine de Latour (which was more exhaustive). "These two volumes, which follow the collection of French poets published by Coustelier, are difficult to find". Brunet, IV, 1071.
    Full red morocco binding ca 1860 stamp-signed on the pastedown Belz-Niedrée. Spine with raised bands elegantly and richly decorated. Triple fillet frame on boards. Wide inner decorative border. Gilt edges. Traces of rubbing on the raised bands, the lower and upper joints of volume I with slight cracking, but without weakness, the upper joint of volume 1 restored. Overall very fresh. The title pages have been inverted without consequence, that of volume I appears before the contents of volume II and vice versa.
    Very handsome copy, perfectly established.
    Racan's poetry follows in the tradition of Desportes and Ronsard. Malherbe, his master whom he met at the age of 16, would reproach him for his nonchalance and excessive liberties, but considered him his most gifted pupil; indeed his writing is more fluid, but also more rustic. After Malherbe's death, Racan abandoned his pen for 20 years. Although desirous like his ancestors to distinguish himself in a military career, his dreamy and distracted nature brought him numerous setbacks and he eventually withdrew from it. He produced in 1619, at the age of 30, the poem that would make him famous: Les Bergeries, which is his most substantial work; and at 24, proposed by Richelieu, he would occupy a seat at the French Academy.
