First edition printed on laid paper. This academy crowned Victor Hugo in 1820 and F.A.R. de Chateaubriand in 1821. Full brown shagreen binding, spine with four raised bands extending onto the boards with blind fillets ending in fleurons thus representing the clasps of medieval books, gilt rolls on headcaps, gilt pointillé on edges, combed paper endpapers and pastedowns, gilt dentelle frame on pastedowns, red edges. Handsome copy despite some light foxing.
