First edition, one of 50 numbered copies on China paper, the only deluxe copies with 50 on Japan paper Work illustrated with 40 magnificent watercolors by Maurice Leloir including 34 full-page and 2 double-page, printed in chromotypography. Publisher's binding in full royal blue percaline, smooth unlettered spine, front cover ornamented with a large polychrome and gilt plaque on the upper board depicting Louis XIV on horseback haloed by the sun, gilt paper endpapers, corners very slightly bumped, binding signed Engel. The blue silk ribbons are damaged and missing from the right margin of the boards. Bookplate pasted on one pastedown. Handsome copy.
