Silver gelatin photograph from the original plate by Pierre Petit who took this photograph around 1880. Cabinet card format. A photograph. Superb print, with strong contrast, very sharp. Several portraits exist from this famous sitting in Pierre Petit's studio, where we always see the scientist up close, in more fashionable attire. He wears the rosette of the Legion of Honor. The sessions at Nadar's appear to be a few years older. In this sitting, Pasteur hints at a smile and wears more elegant clothing. We know of prints from this sitting session but frontal, not in profile. Pierre Petit's framings are quite unusual for the period, tightly focused on the subject.
