    The very first photograph of Victor Hugo with a beard.
    It was in January 1861, after a terrible sore throat, that the writer decided to grow a beard: «I am growing a beard to see if it will protect me against throat-ache.» There are several references to the famous beard in Hugo's correspondence. «Conclusion: a man's head must be handsome, well-touched with intelligence and illumined by thought, in order to look well without a beard; a human face has to be very ugly, indeed...

    Silver gelatin photograph from the original plate by Pierre Petit who took this photograph around 1880. Cabinet card format.
    A photograph. Superb print, with strong contrast, very sharp.
    Several portraits exist from this famous sitting in Pierre Petit's studio, where we always see the scientist up close, in more fashionable attire. He wears the rosette of the Legion of Honor. The sessions at Nadar's appear to be a few years older. In this sitting, Pasteur hints at a smile and wears more elegant clothing. We know of prints from this sitting session but frontal, not in profile. Pierre Petit's framings are quite unusual for the period, tightly focused on the subject.

    An original albumen carte-de-visite photograph of Eugène Delacroix, depicting the artist seated in a chair — his most famous portrait. The session at Pierre Petit’s studio yielded multiple poses; variants of this print survive at the Musée d’Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Mounted on card, with Pierre Petit’s signature in the lower margin and his studio advertisement on the verso.

    The Musée d'Orsay holds a photograph of Doré by Pierre Petit from the same period but the artist wears a black velvet waistcoat, a black coat, hands in pockets.

    It was in 1858 that Pierre Petit established his photographic studio at Place Cadet, and the following year he began his gallery of famous men of the era. The portrait of Alexandre Dumas certainly forms part of this series.
