First edition. Bound in half bottle-green shagreen, smooth spine decorated with gilt and black fillets, marbled paper boards, hand-marbled endpapers, sprinkled edges, one upper corner slightly bumped, contemporary binding. Illustrated with 24 plates and 25 drawings printed in color on China paper, mounted at the head of the introduction and each of the 24 Polichinelle scenes. This copy retains the dedication page to George Sand, which disappears from later editions. A repair to the margins of page 289 and to the color drawing introducing the scene "Le marchand de coups de bâton." A handsome copy, free of foxing.
