The process was first developed in Paris, then London and finally in Germany and was dedicated to representing - in an idealized manner - the most famous panoramas and landscapes of East and West.

The work is a sequel to the Essais sur Paris by Poullain de Saint-Foix published nearly half a century earlier. It was provided by Poullain de Saint-Foix's own nephew. Following the same model, it is a walk through the streets of Paris that serves as the guiding thread to recount various anecdotes and sketch portraits of historical figures. "I will focus especially on the anecdotes that my uncle could not relate... I have worked from the notes I found in my uncle's manuscripts."

The work proceeds in the manner of a dictionary, listing boroughs and villages for each election, with their descriptions. Each election begins with the description and state of the town.

Full midnight blue glazed calf. Flat spine with false raised bands decorated with various roulettes and fillets with some compartments in morocco. Volume IV, which is often lacking, is the translation of Un été à Paris, by Jules Janin. Through its illustrations, one finds a Balzacian Paris. It should be noted that the first volume contains numerous scenes of the Pyrenees, very fashionable at the time. Another volume contains numerous scenes of the Loire (Saumur, Angers, Amboise...).
The work thus seeks to bring together everything remarkable to be found in France, both from an architectural and landscape perspective, with illustrations accompanying the historical and descriptive text. The illustrative richness is remarkable, and one can admire equally the château de Pau and the Panthéon, the cirque de Gavarni and the cathedral of Orléans. What is interesting is that following the trends of the time, the engravings feature figures in period costume, and often show places as they were then.

Second edition, first in parts, printed in 539 copies, this one of 500 copies on paper from the Périgord works.
