An almost complete set of this rare satirical literary journal headed and illustrated by Adolphe Willette.
49 issues from 6 July 1888 to 20 September 1889, each comprising two folio leaves, the first page with a lithograph by Willette, some with caricatures on page three.
With Emile Goudeau as its editor-in-chief, this journal, nominally published on Fridays (though not always actually published then) includes poetry, ads, and news in brief, but its real value lies in the illustrations, done exclusively for it by Willette.

First edition illustrated with 29 plates, 24 headpieces and 89 in-text vignettes, by Gavarni, Huart, Guerin, all wood-engraved.
Contemporary half green shagreen. Spine with raised bands and gilt compartments. Rubbing to head and raised bands. Pale scattered foxing, irregular, sometimes not affecting the white paper at all, other times speckling the margins; overall, fairly little foxing.
Following in the tradition of the famous Diable à Paris, but with less prestigious writers, a satire of foreigners in Paris.
Handsome romantic illustrated work.

Le Charivari is a French illustrated satirical daily newspaper, which was published from 1832 to 1937. Founded in 1832, during the reign of Louis-Philippe, by the republican journalist Charles Philipon, it quickly became a means of communication for the opposition, in the same mocking spirit as the weekly La Caricature created in 1830. It enthusiastically ridiculed the July Monarchy and the bourgeoisie and was often condemned by the courts.
