Le Charivari is a French illustrated satirical daily newspaper, which was published from 1832 to 1937. Founded in 1832, during the reign of Louis-Philippe, by the republican journalist Charles Philipon, it quickly became a means of communication for the opposition, in the same mocking spirit as the weekly La Caricature created in 1830. It enthusiastically ridiculed the July Monarchy and the bourgeoisie and was often condemned by the courts.
In 1858, the change in format of the daily brought new journalists and illustrators to collaborate, such as Pierre Veron, Henri Rochefort, Albert Wolff, Louis Leroy, Louis Adrien Huart, G. Naquet, P. Gigard, J. Denizet, Zabban, Pilotell, as well as four caricaturists from the Journal amusant, Vernier, Darjou, Hadol and Pelcoq.
