A stunning “homage of deep affection” for the author of Inquiétude et reconstruction [Anxiety and Reconstruction], an unflinching portrait of Surrealism between the wars that remains to this day a key reference work. This moving inscription from André Breton on one of his major works is testimony of the respect of the Pope of Surrealism for Crémieux's realistic views in his polemics.

Charles-Theodore of Bavaria, the son of the first King of Bavaria, Maximilian I, was "Generalfeldmarschall" and personal councilor to the King of Bavaria (stamp: "S.K.H.D Prinzen Carl V. Bayern Güter Administration Tegernsee").
A rare copy with a princely provenance in a strictly contemporary binding.

Our copy is exceptionally enriched with a beautiful autograph letter, mounted on tab, 4 pages dated and signed by Louis de Grammont addressed to Villiers de l'Isle Adam in which he regrets that the writer of Axel has "fled the worries of the city "because against them" the countryside is your only asylum "and that the salons in which they participated both are" heartless without you "and" the house of Nina loses three quarters, not to say the five- sevenths of his charms ... "He encourages Villiers, in his exile," in his stay extramural "..." to bring him a tragedy altier, poignant, terrible and jester, where the grotesque elbows the scary,. .. a drama that finally cuts the whistle to the helpless and the envious ...

A little spotting principally affecting first few leaves.
Retaining its rare bande annonce (advertising strip) and a portrait of Champfleury tipped in.

Edition illustrated with 75 inset wood for Volume 1, Volume 2 66, 74 volume 3, 94 Volume 4, and 85 volume 5, all designed by Alphonse de Neuville, Philipoteaux .. . the fifth book was written by madame de Witt, the author's daughter, according to the notes left by one. Some cards colors.
Cardboard editor Magnier Charles signed tail, red and gold. Half red shagreen percaline dish. Back with false nerves decorated with four emblems of French royalty: the salamander, sun, dolphins and a crescent moon. boards decorated with a large red and gold plaque bearing in medallions figures of several kings on red background of foliage. shimmering white guards. Only the upper and lower flat of the first volume bears some gilding shortages in low margin and angular lilies otherwise magnificent example, in superb condition, perfectly fresh, well white paper pristine. Note that the fifth volume is subsequently appeared in a bright red and vermilion.

First edition, one of 50 numbered copies on bibliophile vellum, the only deluxe copies.
