One finds entirely new elements there, beyond Italian history and classical descriptions of monuments and works of art, such as air quality, food, roads, printing houses, courtesans, collections... Two complete volumes are devoted to Rome. The work proceeds by cities and geographical regions. Tables of contents make it easy to find particular elements of the work. A comprehensive work, considering that each volume contains approximately 400 pages. Volume 3 contains a chronology of painting schools and painters in Italy.

Beginning of split at lower joints at head of volumes 3 and 4 over 2 cm, without gravity. Very handsome copy, perfectly established, and perfectly fresh.
The first two parts of this famous chivalric epic were written by Matteo Boiardo in 1483, then continued by Nicolo degli Agostini and Lodovico Domenichi, the whole was recast by Francesco Berni in 1541 who translated the work into Tuscan. Ariosto would write a sequel that would become even more famous: Orlando Furioso, and one naturally finds echoes of this work in Jerusalem Delivered by Tasso (1580). The poem features Roland, nephew of Charlemagne and draws directly from the romances of the knights of the round table (Chrétien de Troyes and consorts) and the song of Roland, the themes being as much thwarted love as chivalric exploits, the whole bathed in a typically medieval marvelous mixing dragons, giants and other fairy creatures. The poem is composed of stanzas of eight verses in rhyme.

Publisher's binding in half red shagreen bound by Engel and richly decorated with two special plates, a repeated ornament at head and foot, scattered stars throughout and thick and thin fillets. Special gilt plate created by Souze, an anchor in the foreground, caravels on the sea and the setting sun in which the American continent appears. The same plate is found on the back without the title. Traces of rubbing at the lower edges on the covers and at the corners, as well as at the outer edges. Nevertheless a very handsome copy, with fine freshness, both external and internal.
The biography of Christopher Columbus (1856) by Count Roselly de Lorgues was significant in its time, elevating the navigator to the rank of Christian and Catholic hero, Léon Bloy would draw from it to write his own version of Columbus: Le révélateur du globe.

Historian originally from Savoy who became its historiographer in the 17th century. While the author was particularly studious, he advocated in history a study of men and characters rather than merely facts, in accordance with the ancients. He took interest in all forms of historical writing and worked in each of them. His principal works are the historical novel Dom Carlos, Histoire de la conjuration des espagnols contre Venise en 1618, Césarion, De la navigation des Romains. The works also contain various treatises on history and philosophy, annotated translations and Les mémoires de la Duchesse de Mazarin, of whom he was the reader and friend, some say lover.

Bitaubé's reputation was already solidly established since his translation of the Iliad when he gave this epic poem in prose inspired by the story of the Hebrew patriarch, who envied by his brothers was sold to a caravan of merchants, etc. The work quickly achieved enough success to see several editions and be translated in several European countries.

In 1652 appeared Aegidi Menagii Miscellanea published by Augustin Courbé in which were gathered for the first time French, Latin, Greek, and Italian poetry. Menage who had obtained a privilege allowing him to print Divers opuscules de vers et de proses for 10 years, before it reverted to Courbé, thus had several poetry pieces printed in very small numbers which he intended for his friends, as with this copy which has the particularity of presenting only a half-title, with editorial information at the end. This is a collection of gallant and amorous poetry tinged with preciosity, including L'oiseleur and other poems, dedicated to Madame de La Fayette and another to the Marquise de Sevigné. It is said that Menage was very much in love with all these women, and that his pretensions were the laughingstock of the salon of the Countess de La Fayette where he was well received, his poetry being welcomed as tributes intended to entertain. Menage however had enough particular relations with Madame de Lafayette that they composed together the famous novella: La princesse de Montpensier.
