A charming edition with a portrait of the playwright engraved by Gaucher after Santerre, and 12 figures by Gravelot intaglio engraved by Le Mire, Flipart, Rousseau, Lempereur, Duclos, Vasseur, Prévost, Simonet and Née.
Contemporary marbled calf, spines richly gilt (their decoration being attributed to Gravelot) with gilt anthropomorphic suns at head, lyres and honeybees to foot, as well as gilt trophies to centre; title in gilt surrounded by gilt laurels, triple gilt fillet frame to covers. Gilt fillet and striae to headpieces and edges of covers, all edges gilt.
A little light spotting, spine and hinges repaired, some parts of the spine re-gilded.

First edition.
Contemporary light brown armorial calf. Spine richly gilt with grotesque motifs and hydra figures at foot. Covers with triple gilt fillets and arms to centre. Gilt roulette frame to pastedowns. Marbled edges.
The major work by the abbé de Condillac and one of the key works of French sensualism.
