Publisher's binding in full brown cloth, smooth spine slightly faded, joint cracked one cm at head of lower board, front board hinge split, endpapers and pastedowns darkened as usual.
Very handsome edition of the works of Horace, with typography executed by the Didot workshop in particularly refined lowercase letters. Work illustrated with 10 original photographic vignettes printed in sepia and mounted, two double-page maps and 6 photographic landscape views mounted.
One of the earliest books illustrated with photography: apart from the frontispiece, the 11 wood-engraved vignettes after Barrias and the 2 double-page lithographed plans, the work is illustrated with 6 original photographic views, printed in sepia and mounted hors texte. This edition forms the first title of the collection, followed subsequently by a Virgil and an Anacreon similarly illustrated, and one of the first productions of photographic publishing in France.

Spine with 5 raised bands richly decorated with 2 blind stamps, 2 grotesque compartments composed of monastic tools, head and tail roll tools. Boards stamped in blind with central lozenge containing ornamental composition, blind border frieze. Gilt roll on leading edges, internal frieze. Marbled edges matching the endpaper pattern. Spine darkened to brown. Discoloration traces on upper board of volume 3. Brown stain on lower board of volume 3. Lightly scratched area on lower board of volume 1. Very handsome copy.

First edition of Michel de Marolles' translation, bilingual, with French alongside the Latin version. A frontispiece with a medallion portrait and legend in volume I, a second allegorical frontispiece in volume II.
Contemporary soft vellum binding. Smooth spine with pen-and-ink title at head. Soiling to spines and boards. Several gatherings loosened in volume I, one in volume II. One perforation to title page of volume I, due to a crossed-out passage in margin. Leaf 131 in volume I partially detached. Leaves 151, 153 detached. Leaf 193 detached. Good copy, fresh.

The first volume contains the Odes and Epodes and the second the Satires, Epistles and Ars Poetica. Michel de Marolles was an indefatigable translator who made available to the general public the works of Antiquity. His bilingual, critical and annotated editions ensured his success. While they earned him criticism from his peers for the accuracy of his translation and notes, they successfully ensured the penetration into culture of Greek and Latin works through the excellence of the editions.

Richly decorated pastedowns with central frame, fleurons in the corners and several successive frames; wide frieze. At the center the initials C. de G. All edges gilt.
Cut to margin of half-title, lacking the right corner. Title page creased and reinforced, same for the last leaf. Light rubbing at head. Handsome copy.

An edition whose value lies in the commentaries by Laevinius Torrentius (1525-1595) on the odes, satires and epistles, Bishop of Antwerp and scholar, and those by Pierre Nanninck (1500-1557), Dutch scholar native of Alkmaar, who concludes the work by commenting on Horace's "Art of Poetry." Posthumous edition produced by the Jesuits of Antwerp, preceded by an Ode Horatiana by Father Andreas Schott.

First edition of the French translation by Jules Janin, one of the few copies on Holland paper which he is no mention, deluxe edition.
