Autograph letter signed by Ernest Renan, 31 lines in black ink regarding his brief entry into politics. In 1869, Ernest Renan ran as an independent candidate for a deputy seat in Seine-et-Marne, which resulted in his electoral defeat. Central fold marks. Ernest Renan thanks his correspondent for the decisive support that triggered his decision to launch into politics: "Vous êtes le premier qui avez parlé au public de ma candidature éventuelle à Meaux, à Lagny." ("You are the first who spoke to the public about my potential candidacy in Meaux, in Lagny.") despite his apprehensions: "J'ai dû en cette circonstance faire une grande violence à mes goûts, mais j'ai pensé qu'on est plus fort à critiquer son temps quand on s'est prêté aux occasions de le servir que quand on s'y est systématiquement refusé..." ("I had to do great violence to my inclinations in this circumstance, but I thought that one is stronger in criticizing one's time when one has lent oneself to opportunities to serve it than when one has systematically refused to do so...") He will not be affected by a potential failure: "Si je réussis pas, je serai vite consolé, si vite consolé à vrai dire que c'est probablement là une raison pour laquelle je ne réussirai pas." ("If I don't succeed, I will be quickly consoled, so quickly consoled in truth that this is probably a reason why I will not succeed.") but nevertheless requests the journalistic support of his political mentor: "Vous êtes lu sur les bords de la Marne comme partout, et votre voix sera là d'un grand poids." ("You are read on the banks of the Marne as everywhere, and your voice will carry great weight there.")
