Autograph receipt dated and signed by Eugénie Krantz, for Paul Verlaine, confirming receipt of payment from his publisher Léon Vanier. Small pin holes at the "R" of Reçu. "10 Avril 1894, Reçu de M. Vanier éditeur la somme de cinq francs pour droit exclusif de publier la pièce de vers ci-joint "anniversaire" Paris 10 Avril 94 autorisé par M. Verlaine Mlle Krantz." At the end of his life, Paul Verlaine, despite being elected Prince of Poets by his contemporaries, led a life of poverty between alcoholism and vagrancy to the point of selling this poem to his publisher for the miserable sum of five francs. The poet met Eugénie Krantz known as "Nini-Mouton" in 1891. Alternately a milliner, prostitute and cabaret courtesan, Krantz shared the final years of Paul Verlaine's decline until his death on 8 January 1896. Penniless, vagrant, and abandoned by all, she died in 1897.
