Preface by Maurice de Tourneux who tells the story of this work and reproduces the original preface of the book, a dialogue between publisher and author. This youthful novel telling a love story borrows unusual narrative techniques that look toward Sterne and Diderot and questions the status of narrative fiction in the early 19th century.
