First illustrated edition with 12 compositions by E. Bayard engraved by Massard. One of 130 copies on Grand Japon Impérial, first deluxe paper, No. 32. Total edition of 500 copies. Each engraving in double state, before and after letters. Literary notice by Gustave Geffroy. Contemporary half morocco with corners, signed Grouillet at the top of the first endpaper. Light traces of rubbing (spine, joints, corners, edges). Spine uniformly faded to green. Top edge gilt. Covers and spine preserved. Uncut copy with full margins. Paper perfectly fresh. Bookplate of Paul Gavault. Handsome copy. Considered by many as the author's masterpiece, this realistic novel of manners was quite successful and had several film adaptations from early in its existence.
