Prolific Spanish writer, Francisco Santos (1618-1696), who was a soldier by profession, is famous for his picaresque novels and short stories from which Lesage drew abundantly for Gil Blas and his Diable boiteux. He defends the poor against the rich, and the humble against the wealthy, a typical attitude of the picaresque novel, and reflection of Madrilenian and Spanish society.
