    First edition, our copy being one of the service de presse copies. Cover somewhat faded, pale dampstain affecting the entire spine. Literary contributions by Saint-John Perse (Chanson), Max Jacob (Poèmes), André Breton (Introduction au discours "Sur le peu de réalité"), Léon-Paul Fargue (Nuées), Valery Larbaud (Lettre d'Italie), etc. Commerce, literary review founded by Marguerite Caetani, appeared as twenty-nine "quarterly notebooks published under the direction of Valéry, Fargue and Larbaud" between 1924 and 1932. Its publication formed part of the competitive tradition of French reviews of the 1920s and was not content merely to showcase the most prominent authors of French literature: it played the role of "discoverer" of young talents and unearthed forgotten key texts. Some pages marginally shaded, otherwise a handsome copy.

    Some slight, minor foxing.


    Rare signed and inscribed copy by Gustave Flaubert to (Louis) de Carné, journalist and historian, several of whose works were listed in the inventory of Flaubert's personal library.


    Flaubert's interest in de Carné's work was not always benevolent, however. Critical notes on his articles can be found in the Bouvard and Pécuchet files.
    Moreover, the publication of Salammbô coincided with the controversial election of Louis de Carné to the Académie Française, which some critics deemed a clerical coup d'état. His election resulted from a campaign orchestrated by Bishop Dupanloup against the opposing candidate, Émile Littré, whose materialist definition of man had provoked the ire of religious and Orléanist factions. Flaubert refers to the scandal of this election in a letter to the Goncourt brothers dated 6 May 1863: "Have you sufficiently railed against Sainte-Beuve and cursed the Académie over Carné's appointment?"
    While this inscription likely predates the election, it remains a curious tribute from an author once accused of “offense against public morality and religion” to a future representative of religious power within the prestigious Académie.

    Handsome autograph insciption from Léon Bloy to the painter Georges Rouault: "Rien pour son art - Il n'y a pas de caricature".
    Spine reinforced with some filled in lacks, a tear repaired to the half title page,the one with the inscription.
    This copy has a chemise an slipcase of full black morocco over marbled paper boards, lined with sheep.

    Rouault fait la connaissance de Léon Bloy en 1904 par l'intermédiaire d'une de ses oeuvres: « On m'apprend que le peintre Georges Rouault, élève de Gustave Moreau, s'est passionné pour moi. Ayant trouvé chez son maître "La Femme pauvre"..., ce livre l'a mordu au coeur, blessé incurablement » (Journal de L. Bloy, 16 mars 1904). Naît alors une indéfectible amitié entre les deux artistes. Cependant lorsqu'en 1905 Rouault expose au Salon d'Automne "Monsieur et Madame Poulot" inspiré du roman de Bloy, la réaction de celui-ci est violente: « ... Cet artiste qu'on croyait capable de peindre des séraphins, semble ne plus concevoir que d'atroces et vengeresses caricatures. L'infamie bourgeoise opère en lui une si violente répercussion d'horreur que son art paraît blessé à mort. Il a voulu faire mes Poulot personnages de "La Femme Pauvre". À aucun prix je ne veux de cette illustration. Il s'agissait de faire ce qu'il y a de plus tragique : deux bourgeois, mâle et femelle, complets : candides, pacifiques, miséricordieux et sages à mettre l'écume de la peur à la bouche des chevaux des constellations. Il a fait deux assassins de petite banlieue. » Nul mieux que Raïssa Maritain ne sut décrire l'amitié complexe qui unit le jeune peintre et le vieil écrivain, analysant à la fois "la raison profonde de leur dissentiment" en citant une lettre de Bloy à Rouault de 1907 : « Vous êtes attiré par le laid exclusivement. " comme leur "admiration" qu'elle explique par "la vive foi de l'un et de l'autre, (...) l'élévation et la rigueur de leur conscience d'artistes". "Combien de fois - écrit-elle - dans les années qui ont suivi, n'avons-nous pas vu Rouault chez Bloy, debout, appuyé contre le mur, un léger sourire sur ses lèvres closes, le regard au loin, le visage apparemment impassible, mais d'une pâleur qui allait s'accentuant lorsque la question de la peinture moderne était abordée. Rouault pâlissait, mais gardait jusqu'au bout un silence héroïque. Et toujours, malgré cette irréductible opposition sur la question même de son art, il est resté fidèle à Léon Bloy. On eût dit qu'il venait chercher chez Bloy les accusations mêmes qui tourmentaient en lui ce qu'il avait de plus cher, - non pour les soumettre à une discussion quelconque, mais pour éprouver contre elles la force de l'instinct qui l'entraînait vers l'inconnu et qui devait triompher de tout obstacle." ("A l'aube de nouvelles amitiés" in La Nouvelle Relève, octobre 1941)C'est le même Léon Bloy, respectueux mais immuablement critique à l'égard de son jeune ami, qui lui dédicace ce portrait d'une sainte, cette élégie de la beauté qu'il ne saura jamais percevoir dans l'oeuvre de Rouault.

    First collected edition containing some unpublished pieces. One of the rare copies containing both epistles by Bois-Robert and Scarron (most copies contain fewer preliminary leaves). A frontispiece portrait of the author drawn by Petrus and engraved by Daret; a title vignette, printer's device on title page.
    Contemporary limp vellum binding. Smooth unlettered spine. Light stains to upper board. Worming to preliminary leaves, after the first two leaves, to lower margin; although confined to margin, numerous wormholes throughout preliminary leaves. Also to note, worming to table of contents and extending from final text leaves, always to lower margin. Some foxing and yellowed leaves.
    This edition was largely prepared by the author himself and is the only one he acknowledged, conscious of the value of his work and his approaching death (died in 1646); it contains 268 pieces, of which 173 are unpublished. Some pieces that had appeared in collective volumes do not appear in this complete works. François Maynard is one of the principal names in poetry of the first half of the 17th century, alongside Malherbe, Racan, Viau, Regnier. A disciple of Malherbe, his poetry is distinguished by the great clarity of its style and regularity of its verse; it also conveys a certain melancholy.

    Our copy is complete, as frontispiece, with the portrait of H. de Balzac printed on China paper and etched by E. Hédouin as well as its 3 autograph facsimiles (which are often lacking according to Clouzot).

All birds (...), students, sometimes even literate, came to consult this man who knew all of the library, the book he was reading or at least bought. " (G. Baume In the land of letters, 1922).
    Maupassant did was not wrong, as he says in the letter to Henry Kistemaeckers of 7 May 1882 "I answer for sale at the Bookstore New You will see the 3 employees are called Achilles Heymann, Ménard and.. Reboul (...) It is essential (...) to provide a copy to each (...). - I'll go to the library to write a word for each of them - in this one house has sold 900 copies of La Maison Tellier. No newspaper is used as the three advertising. "

Very numerous vignettes by Monnier, Français, Daubigny... The compositions with multitudes of vignettes by Bertall on subjects such as evenings at the opera, Paris by night... which constitute the ensemble of Paris comique are particularly delightful. This edition is rarer than le Diable à Paris.
    Contemporary green half-shagreen. Smooth spine decorated with series of romantic tools in compartments. Green corsillonné paper boards. Borders rubbed and corners slightly bumped. Some scattered foxing, principally in the outer margins, on good white paper. The text jumps from p. 5 to 41 without loss, the text continuing. Good copy.
    Portrait of Paris, in all its aspects, at the beginning of the Second Empire, Le tiroir du Diable sails on the success of le Diable à Paris with the same collective for texts and illustrations. One notes the presence of Balzac's text: Physiologie des boulevards, two texts by Sand and one by Musset. The other collaborators being celebrated litterateurs of this period, Edouard Ourliac, Frédéric Soulié... At the beginning of the work, Lavallée's text on the geography of Paris (which was also present at the beginning of le Diable à Paris). At the end of the work, statistics of Paris, the work always wanting to be both entertaining and informative. In this regard, all the texts, satirical or not, of the work are more or less of journalistic character, but as journalism was then practiced under the Second Empire. The work concludes with the statistics of Paris.

    Contemporary full glazed calf binding. Spine with four raised bands decorated with a red morocco title-label. All edges speckled. Headcaps worn, joints cracked and corners slightly bumped. Some faint dampstains and a small tear at the bottom of page 15.
    A worthy representative of the Age of Enlightenment, Boyer d'Argens is a philosophical writer, skeptic and pamphleteer; his series of critical and epistolary books, in the manner of the Persian Letters (Jewish Letters, Chinese Letters, Cabalistic Letters) made him famous. The work is in fact a libertine novel recounting the loves of the Count de Vaxere, initially destined for the ecclesiastical state. Love for a Venetian Jewish woman will lead him to conversion.
