Maurice Audin, French mathematician and member of the Algerian Communist Party, was arrested during the Battle of Algiers on June 11, 1957 and disappeared without his body ever being found.
The French army claiming that he had escaped, some personalities including Pierre Vidal-Naquet protested and denounced his martyrdom after he was certainly tortured by the French army, General Aussaresses acknowledging much later having given the order to kill Maurice Audin.
