First and only octavo edition with 78 illustrations by George Roux, including 12 chromotypography prints and 2 colored maps.
Publisher's binding by Hetzel "à l'éventail et à l'éléphant" in full red percaline signed A. Lenègre, polychrome front cover signed Engel featuring the title in a black and gilt fan, multiple black and gilt frames, a gilt elephant head in the upper left corner, three small illustrations and various gilt navigation and exploration instruments, all framed within green foliage, back cover of type "i" as indicated by Jauzac, spine decorated with several colored and gilt illustrations, all edges gilt.
Spine somewhat faded with rubbing at headcaps. Blue endpapers replaced.
Les Naufragés du Jonathan takes place on Hoste Island, from 1881 to 1893, near Cape Horn and tells the adventures of a group of shipwrecked people numbering about a thousand who find themselves on this island; the man who saved them, Kaw-Djer, becomes or becomes again their leader with each crisis that befalls this population.
