We attach an extraordinary handwritten note signed by Pagnol on the subject of the unforgettable Marius; five lines signed in blue ink and the date and place by machine at the bottom right (“Cassis 1st July 1941”): ”Jamais Mr Raimu ne tournera dans un film de moi ni ne mettra les pieds dans mes studios.” (”Mr Raimu will never shoot in a film of mine or set foot in my studios.”) Marcel Pagnol naturally never argued with Raimu, his favourite actor, whose eulogy he delivered: “One cannot make a speech at the grave of a father, a brother or a son, and you were all three at once.”
This note comes from the library of the Provençal caricaturist, filmmaker and writer Carlo Rim who was a very close friend of Marcel Pagnol, Raimu, Fernandel, Antonin Artaud and Max Jacob.
