First edition of Ruy Blas, the title with the address at Paris and Leipzig, the first state of the first edition without mention of Les Burgraves. Contemporary half light brown calf, spine in five compartments with fillets, gilt specks and blindruled fillets, gilt Greek friezes to head and foot, marbled endpapers and pastedowns. A little spotting. Autograph inscription signed by Victor Hugo to Madame Mareuil, who first played the character of Casilda in Ruy Blas. Signature of the actor M. Montdidier (who played the Comte de Camporeal) to first page of text. Provenance: from the library of Madame Mareuil. A fine and handsome copy in an elegant contemporary binding, with an autograph inscription by Victor Hugo to an actress of his circle.
