First French edition translated by F. d'Albert-Durade. Preliminary note by the author in English and French giving his consent to the translation. The first English edition was published in London in 1859.
Contemporary half wine-red sheep binding. Smooth spine decorated with series of fillets. Gilt title and volume number. Spine uniformly lightened. Some foxing at the beginning of the work, otherwise the whole very fresh.
George Eliot's first work which was immediately recognized as important despite a small print run, and which received Dickens' approval.
