Dark traces to the left and right of the world map. Beautiful spine with soft but not collapsed headcaps, infinitely faded; this spine has the particularity of possessing a laminated lower section, as with the first inlay bindings, one might think it is one of the first anchor spines, formed like the first gilt globe bindings, with an inlay in the lower section; however, this world map binding is not at its first attempt, it has been thinned in this version (the first ones too bulky and heavy would deform) and the spine is more harmonious, losing its wide unsightly red band. Let us recall that this binding enjoyed a short life and dressed only three titles: The Children of Captain Grant, The Mysterious Island and Matthias Sandorf. Perfect second cover. Well-pointed corners, lightly rubbed. A tear on the interior border of the second cover measuring 8mm. Perfect edges. Shiny percaline. Very fresh copy, completely free of foxing.
Magnificent copy, very rare in this condition.
One of the author's great classics, 2 children set out to search for their shipwrecked father. The novel leads the reader from Scotland to New Zealand via the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, the Strait of Magellan, the Andes mountain range, the Argentine pampa, the Cape of Good Hope, Amsterdam Island, and Australia. Let us recall that The Children of Captain Grant forms a trilogy with The Mysterious Island and then 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, not a sequel, but indeed a trilogy.

He made the fortune of publisher Barba who wrote his biography.

These lithographs were originally published separately from 1836 to 1838, and were reduced in size for this volume.
Contemporary half calf binding with lavender tint. Smooth spine decorated with mirror rococo tooling. Spine uniformly darkened. Joints cracked. One scratch on the upper cover. Evidence of rubbing. Lithograph 36 has a repaired tear running lengthwise across the entire page. Very light scattered foxing. Small dampstain to lower margin of lithographs 48 to 57. Paper generally somewhat browned.

The whole is contained in a moiré silk case closed by two ivory clasps, following the illustrator's design.
The case is partially and lightly discolored, with a light stain at the head of the first board of the case, handsome copy.
Signatures of Ling Chou, of the president and vice-president of the Society of Women Bibliophiles which published the work.

Le Chat noir is a weekly magazine created by Rodolphe Salis and Emile Goudeau, published from 1882 to 1897, with the aim of promoting the famous cabaret of the same name, serving as its record. It published the texts recited during performances. It is, moreover, an important literary and artistic testimony of the end of the 19th century, centered around bohemian life and the Parisian effervescence characteristic of it.

This copy includes all 15 engravings depicting the most illustrious figures of the Montagne.
Provenance: From the library of Champfleury (no. 519 in the catalogue published by Léon Sapin in 1890), then from the library of Archibald Philip Primrose, fifth Earl of Rosebery, with his engraved bookplate mounted on a pastedown: "Honi soit mal y pense" and his "Rosebery / Durdans" stamp at the top right of the title page. He served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Illustrated edition with first printing of a title vignette, 140 half-page vignettes, all by Tony Johannot, engraved by Brevière. Moorish-style bandeaux and drop capitals. Text framed with a double black fillet.
The original frontispiece has been replaced by an original signed watercolor by Adolphe Lalauze (1838-1906) for an illustration of Le Diable boiteux, and an original ink drawing by the painter and illustrator Henri Pille (1844-1897), dedicated to his friend Dr. Laffont and dated May 3, 1896. Furthermore, the copy has been enhanced with 9 etchings engraved by Louis Monziès after drawings by Henri Pille for the Lemerre edition of 1879, in two states, on vellum before letters and on chine before letters (the 9 proofs on chine bear Pille's autograph signature); and with a portrait of the author and 7 etchings by Adolphe Lalauze for the Jouaust edition of 1880, before letters on laid paper (each proof has been signed in red by the artist). Copy assembled by Dr. Laffont, dedicatee of Henri Pille's drawing, who noted in his hand the list of added pieces opposite the cover. The binding was also executed at his request by Charles Meunier in 1899.
Full lavender morocco binding signed Charles Meunier at the bottom of the pastedown (with morocco-edged slipcase). Spine with raised bands decorated with 2 tools and the same mirrored in the center. Covers with a wide frame repeating the motif used on the spine. Decorative border frame inside on the pastedowns. Edges gilt. Covers and spine preserved. Some pale foxing only from p. 304 to 312. Traces of rubbing to joints and headcaps. Some offsetting from the engravings.
Superb copy in very rare condition.
