Alongside his diplomatic career, Paul-Pascal-Henri Pognon (1853-1921) devoted himself to Mesopotamian archaeology in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq.

Combining field discoveries, acquisitions from local antiquities dealers and official survey missions, he assembled Semitic inscriptions whose meaning he deciphered through painstaking translation work. A specialist in Assyrian, Syriac and Aramaic, he produced numerous scholarly publications that became important works of reference.

In 1883, he attracted considerable attention with the discovery of two important inscriptions on bas-reliefs dating from the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II at Wadi Brissa in Lebanon.
