Reprint of the Exposé statistique du Tunkin, first published in London in 1811 by Ant. Jean Bapt. de Montgon (cf. Cordier, Indosinica, 997).
Contemporary uniform half tawny calf bindings, smooth spines decorated with double gilt fillets, red and black calf lettering and volume labels, a few scuffs to the spines, marbled paper-covered boards, yellow edges.
Occasional light foxing.
A French missionary born at Bourgueil around 1764 and deceased in 1830, La Bissachère entered the Paris Foreign Missions Seminary before being sent to Tonkin in 1790, where he remained for seventeen years.
During his stay, he travelled extensively throughout the provinces of Tonkin as well as the neighbouring kingdoms of Cochinchina, Cambodia, and Laos.
