An important essay on the origins of the peoples of the American continent (North and South). The author uses several approaches to produce a powerful comparative study of languages (most notably those of the islands of South-East Asia, Mexico and Peru), dress and traditions. Scherer’s conclusion, notably relying on Classical literature and various accounts of voyages, is that the people of the Americas had several different migratory origins, including Chinese, African and Asian tribes. North America, and especially Alaska, received several waves of migration from the Bering Strait, via Kamchatka, and from Asia.

This plan for peace in Europe by the economist and philosopher Ange Goudar lays out the origins and impact of conflicts on European nations, putting the emphasis on their economic consequences. The author then proposes a European entente and a supranational army that would punish any country that engaged in warfare, making the point that the blessings of peace first and foremost result from a change in behavior and that European nations therefore needed to experience a period of peace in order to understand its benefits fully.

The originality of this work lies in having assembled them in dictionary form, though without citing the authors. The whole forms a monumental ana which can thus be browsed from beginning to end, with pleasure, surprise and instruction: it should be noted that history and historical figures are given pride of place.

The work proceeds chronologically from what is known earliest about the Chartrains up to 1786, in the form of annals. Information on agriculture, commerce, customs...
