First edition, printed in a small number of copies, of this offprint from the Revue des deux mondes, issue of 15 September 1858. 

Printed colportage stamp on the half-title, a few small spots of foxing.

Our copy is preserved in its original state, stitched in temporary pink paper wrappers, with a few pale stains at the foot of the rear wrapper.

One of the contributions made by the liberal journalist Prévost-Paradol (1829-1870) to the moderate opposition to the Second Empire: beginning with a comparison between France and Great Britain, he highlights the limited freedom of action enjoyed by believers under France's Concordat system. 

At the head of the half-title, an autograph presentation inscription from Prévost-Paradol to the former minister Odilon Barrot (1791-1873), who had withdrawn from political life in 1851.
