Original, rare photograph on albumen paper mounted on card by Gaspard-Félix Tournachon known as Nadar showing Alphonse Daudet in chest view, wearing a lorgnette. Photograph mounted on red-bordered card, bottom right, the letter N. On reverse: Nadar. Rue d'Anjou St Honoré. Paris. In grey pencil: Alphonse Daudet. According to a notice from a sale held by Sotheby's on 31 May 2016, the photography session took place in 1891 and resulted in several shots including the one sold by Sotheby's, the writer still in chest view but facing forward and looking at the photographer, and this one, the writer in profile, wearing a lorgnette. The Sotheby's photograph was sold as part of a sale dedicated to Marcel Proust; Proust remained a fervent admirer of Daudet whose work evoked for him the charms of childhood. He was furthermore deeply enamoured with Alphonse Daudet's younger son, Lucien Daudet, whom he asked to find him a photograph of his father.
