Fourth edition of the so-called Port-Royal translation established by Ant. Le Maistre, and continued by Antoine Arnauld and Louis-Isaac Le Maistre de Sacy. The first was published in 1667. Contemporary binding in full midnight blue morocco. Spine with five raised bands decorated with gilt compartments and fillets. Gilt fillet framing the boards. All edges gilt. Some worm damage at foot of spine. One corner slightly damaged. Some rubbing. While the translation was received with the greatest favor in Jansenist circles, it was quickly criticized and censures (banned by the Council of State and the Pope) and attacks followed, notably from the Jesuits. This translation would be integrated into the great project led by Le Maistre de Sacy and was realized through the grand edition of La sainte bible, known by its designation as the Bible de Port-Royal.
