New edition expanded with the English text for the "best pieces" and illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author by Kneller, ornamented by Marillier and engraved by Lebeau, as well as 17 fine figures by Marillier engraved by Dambrun, Duflos, Gaucher, Godefroy et al. Contemporary full marbled blonde calf binding. Smooth spines ornately gilt in compartments with floral and star motifs, as well as small bird tools, blonde morocco title and volume labels. Covers triple-ruled with stars at corners. All edges marbled. One headcap damaged at corner. Despite this minor flaw, very handsome copy, very fresh, of this beautifully illustrated work. Edition prepared by Abbé de La Porte, bringing together translations by various authors. Pope was both a great classical poet (the greatest of the first half of the 18th century), a philosopher noted for his Essay on Man, as well as a novelist: Memoirs of Martin Scrivelius. The works notably contain his critical essays.
