Contemporary full blonde calf binding. Smooth spine decorated with gilt dentelle and fleurons as well as a brown morocco title label. Triple gilt fillet framing the boards. Gilt roulette on the edges and headcaps. All edges gilt. Good copy.
These two poems by Pope were brought together quite early and multiple editions were made of them, the first is a rather lyrical didactic poem on the nature of man and his place in the universe, and the second, quite different, is a graceful and libertine poem on the divinities of love, sylphs and gnomes, who assist young girls in their amorous emotions.

Martinus Scriblerus was originally a literary club whose members (Pope, Swift, John Gay, Arbuthnot...) gathered around the satire of knowledge and erudition.
Scriblerus means scribbler. The texts were written collectively and by different hands, but always under the fictitious name of Martinus Scriblerus. The club was founded in 1712 and closed in 1745. The work therefore establishes the biography of the illustrious scholar Martinus Scriblerus with all the satirical and humorous verve typical of 18th-century English literature.

Pope was both the greatest classical poet of England during the first half of the 18th century, universally admired and acclaimed, and a philosopher recognized for his Essay on Man. His translation of Homer remained a classic in England. The collection of his works in a quality publishing enterprise had considerable success in Europe, and certain influence in the world of letters.

New edition, illustrated with a frontispiece by Delamonce, an engraved portrait by Kornlein, and 23 figures by Frankendaal. This edition contains two more volumes than the 1754 edition.

Pope's Essay on Man, a philosophical poem, is translated in prose, and is preceded by a long preface by the translator. In the Turkish Letters, Saint-Foix was inspired by Montesquieu's model (who himself was inspired by Manara's Chinese Spy model), but while the Letters follow the same principle, they do not contain, as in Montesquieu, the lengthy descriptions; they are entirely devoted to narrative and to the comparison of manners and customs among the French and the Turks.
