Edition established by Pierre Coste, with additions by Thomas-Simon Gueullette and François-Louis Jamet, published one year after its first publication in 1724. Full mottled calf bindings, spines with five raised bands decorated with gilt fleurons, red morocco title labels, marbled paper endpapers and pastedowns, gilt rolls on edges, red edges. Joints, corners, raised bands and edges rubbed. Lower headcap of vol. 2 rubbed. Pages lightly and uniformly browned on vol. 1 (144-168), some minor stains on pp. 357-59 of vol. 2. Illustrated with a very handsome portrait-frontispiece of Montaigne engraved by Chéreau the younger, as well as numerous headpieces and tailpieces. Title pages printed in red and black. Handsome copy in contemporary binding of Montaigne's masterpiece.
