First edition. A printed slip bearing the new date of 1757 has been pasted over every date (the 1754 printings were sold under the date 1757 in order to pass them off as a new edition; Brunet, moreover, records no edition dated 1754, since all copies carry such a slip). Illustrated with three title vignettes and four headpieces by Eisen. Titles printed in red and black. Wide margins. Good impression, with numerous footnotes. Translated by Mallet.
Contemporary full tortoiseshell calf. Spine with raised bands, decorated. Red morocco title and volume labels. Interior generally fresh. Some rubbing.
A fine copy.
This edition of a great classic of French history is distinguished by the quality and accuracy of its narrative, as well as by its beauty and by the critical apparatus supplied by Grosley. In this respect it is the most complete of the early editions. This rich work is at once a history of the Wars of Religion in France, a political history, a narrative history of the deeds of the principal protagonists, and finally a history of the Catholic League and its members. As the history of Henri IV and of the wars against the Leaguers forms a separate section, the publisher gave it its own pagination.
