Very rare collation of volumes from the famous Bell edition of British poets in uniform binding, which adds up to 101 volumes here and whose printing was widely spread over time, the volumes being sold by author. Volume 8, which brought together parts 5 and 6 of Edmund Spencer's poetic works is unfortunately missing. Some volumes appear for the first time, others are second editions. This particularly important edition for British poetry brings together 39 poets from Chaucer to Charles Churchill and 99 figures (portraits and frontispieces). It is precious because many poets saw their first complete edition this way, notably John Donne.

English binding in contemporary blond sheepskin. Spine decorated with various finishing tools, including a kneeling King, with multiple filets Title piece in green morocco. Overall, clean paper, but some browned leaves with foxing, notably some engravings.

Les Iambes initially appeared in 1832 and remains the author's best-known collection, which made him immediately famous and made him the spokesman for the July 1830 Revolution, and one of the essential figures of Romanticism. "This collection ranks him among the greatest combat poets between Agrippa d'Aubigné and Victor Hugo" (Laffont-Bompiani, Dictionnaire des Oeuvres). Hugo said he found in Iambes "astonishing verses that no one else will ever write again" and Baudelaire that he was "naturally a poet and a great poet." The series of poems on social misery, Lazare, which completes the work is one of Barbier's greatest successes and makes the entire collection the most important published by the author, in an inspiration that the poet, for many critics, would never surpass again.

Dr. Petit, chief surgeon at Lyon hospital, composed this poetry intended as a metaphor for the dangers of onanism. The work begins with praise for Tissot, author of works on onanism. The poem, awarded by the floral games of Toulouse, is followed by commentary and a dissertation on the scourge of masturbation. According to examples provided by the greatest physicians, one risks no less than death, and at best, like the poem's hero, melancholy, apathy, and weakness of the entire body. Onanism is presented as the primary cause of ailments afflicting youth, their fundamental cause, whether the effects be consumption, cataracts, or nervous diseases.
