Minimalist and extremely rare, over so many years, are the illustration sketches: in 1962 in L'Express, a hand brandishes a book, against a page background; in 1979, in Libération, a blank square in the middle of the page, bearing as sole caption the name of Maurice Blanchot and a quote from L'Entretien infini ("un vide d'univers: rien qui fut visible, rien qui fut invisible" ["a void of universe: nothing that was visible, nothing that was invisible"])" (C. Bident, Maurice Blanchot).

    It was in 1858 that Pierre Petit established his photographic studio at Place Cadet, and the following year he began his gallery of famous men of the era. The portrait of Alexandre Dumas certainly forms part of this series.

The coloring of the photographs uses the traditional technique of distemper painting (natural pigments mixed with glue) applied with a brush. Photographers thus employed painters rather than the watercolorists used for prints.

    The koto, on the left, is an instrument of Chinese origin but nonetheless part of Japanese musical culture. The shamisen - or samisen in English - is also Chinese and is likewise an inseparable element of Japan's traditional music.
    The musician on the left has her fingers encircled with picks to pluck the strings of her instrument, while the second uses a large ivory plectrum.
    Handsome impression with very good contrast.
