New edition of the French translation (the first having appeared in 1578 in folio and octavo formats) which, according to Barbier, is owed to two Benedictines: Denys Hangart and Jean Gillot. According to recent research, Hangart would be the sole translator and Jean Gillot would be the scholarly editor. Publisher's marks on title page. The Bibliothèque Nationale de France only holds the 1586 reprints by the same publisher and one 1578 copy, in folio, from Lyon.
Contemporary bindings in full speckled brown sheep. Spines with raised bands decorated. Gilt title and volume labels. Set rubbed, gilding faded and surface damage obscuring the gilding on spines. Three corners with slight leather...

First edition, rare, of these three editions, functioning as 3 distinct parts of a single work (the signature of the gatherings indeed links the parts together; it happens however that one finds certain texts in isolation). 3 title pages with the printer's device of the cockerel.
Early 20th century full vellum binding. Smooth spine with title in pen in red and black. Stains and soiling. Good copy, very fresh.
The philosophical dialogue of waking and sleep bears witness to a relatively pessimistic and skeptical vision, typical of the Reformed vision. Ugoni was indeed Protestant and his perception of man and the world are unquestionably its reflection. The impossibility of...
