There’s no need to introduce this famous work, a satire of Second Empire society. The work was initiated by Hetzel who – under the pseudonym of de Stahl – authored several of the texts and commissioned others from the most notable writers of the day : Balzac, Musset, Sand, La Bedollière, and so on. The final chapter includes a fantasy of various writers being imprisoned in the botanical gardens for public entertainment, one of the great imaginative leaps by Grandville, full of verve and inventiveness.
A good copy, fresh and without spotting.

Cartonnage editor said "the portrait glued" to the signed Souze plate and connected by Lenègre. Back to the lighthouse. second board Lenègre like "e". Belle top plate. Slight discolouration under the cartridge of the author's name. A slightly emerged slip. A notebook is off from the inside. Rubbed corners and slightly bent. Back a little past but net gold and colors. Headdresses and rubbed folded. Second course with dirt, but good enough. Few scattered spots on a fresh paper.
Good copy.

The volume features a remarkable diversity of typographical elements, including elaborate text borders and tailpieces.

Le Diable à Paris is an extraordinary and quintessentially Romantic work, gathering texts by illustrious contributors (Balzac’s "philosophy of married life"; Musset’s "Mimi Pinson"...) and graced with copious illustrations. This type of publication followed the immense success of the Physiologies, which humorously depicted the manners and characters of Parisians both in spirit and appearance. The first volume opens with a history of Paris by Lavallée, and the second with a geography of Paris (ending with Parisian statistics). This portrait of the capital is of particular interest, as it predates the sweeping transformations Paris would undergo under the Second Empire.

First and only octavo edition with 78 illustrations by George Roux, including 12 chromotypography prints and 2 colored maps.

Les Naufragés du Jonathan takes place on Hoste Island, from 1881 to 1893, near Cape Horn and tells the adventures of a group of shipwrecked people numbering about a thousand who find themselves on this island; the man who saved them, Kaw-Djer, becomes or becomes again their leader with each crisis that befalls this population.

Editor Cardboard both cobalt blue elephant (as the name of Roethel). Souze signed plate. Binding signed Lenègre on the second flat (type b. with its octagonal badge cold) with a star, mark the First printinging from 1878. Beautiful top plate with minimal defects = slightly folded corner, rubbing along with loss color. Back in good condition, without discoloration but probably restored tail, with small white spots. The second course, besides a few scratches and friction was taken to the bottom right corner, with refill (probably an old wetness). pale scattered spots.
Adventure novel dedicated to the issue of slavery, especially the slave trade by Africans themselves. This is one of the best stories of Verne, where a narrative is the most successful.

The collected edition for the first 16 volumes and first editions for Les Contemplations and La Légende des Siècles.
Contemporary uniform half dark blue polished calf by Simier, relieur du Roi, spines in compartments with blindstamped decoration, fillets, compartments and gilt motifs.

This set is illustrated – as well as the 34 vignettes of the Furne edition engraved on steel after drawings by Raffet, Johannot, Colin and Louis Boulanger – with 48 further illustrations, including an engraving by Devéria of the Odes and Ballads, an engraved title for the Autumn Leaves (1831), the lithographic frontispiece by Charlet for Hernani, that of the King Entertains Himself from the 1832 Renduel edition by Tony Johannot, and the original frontispieces for Lucrezia Borgia (1833) and Queen Mary of England by Célestin Nanteuil, as well as the 21 plates of the Perrotin de Notre Dame de Paris edition (1844), and so on.
A rare set, partly first editions, rich with engravings important to Hugo's work and remarkably bound by Simier.
