First edition, only a small number of copies were printed according to Jauzac. 74 illustrations by Banett, among which 13 photographs (Barbados, Saint Lucie) and 12 polychromes plates and a map of the West Indies.
Publisher's binding au globe doré in type 3, that is the most successful type for this binding, with the upper plate by Blancheland, binding by Engel. Second cover type h, with the letters intertwined on a black background.
A beautiful first plate in gleaming gold with discreet stains on the cartouche, and in the sky. Some minor discoloration on the external border. A corner is a bit rubbed. The spine is sunned, the gold is still present. The spine head is very slightly rubbed. The vignette with the lighthouse is slightly soiled. The second cover is good, with some dirt. Pale scattered foxing. A beautiful copy overall.
The West Indies school, a well-known English college, only welcomes young people who are of West Indian origins. Nine residents are attributed a scholarship for a trip. They will undertake an eventful sea crossing to the archipelago of the West Indies, the captain and the team being in fact crooks.

One of the author's most famous adventure novels in which Michel Strogoff, messenger of the Russian Tsar, from Moscow to Irkutsk (Capital of eastern Siberia), must warn the Tsar's brother of the arrival of the Tartar hordes who decided to invade Siberia.

First edition of the French translation by Prosper Mérimée (for the first four stories) and Ivan Tourgueniev (for the other three).
Binding in half brown sheepskin with small corners, back with four nerves ends set with golden garlands and adorned with gilt fillets, gold friezes at the head and tail, marbled paper plates, Contemporary binding.

Contemporary dark-green half shagreen over marbled paper boards by Werner, spine in five compartments with gilt garlands and triple gilt decorated compartments, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, marbled edges, corners bumped.
There’s no need to introduce this famous work, a satire of Second Empire society. The work was initiated by Hetzel who – under the pseudonym of de Stahl – authored several of the texts and commissioned others from the most notable writers of the day : Balzac, Musset, Sand, La Bedollière, and so on. The final chapter includes a fantasy of various writers being imprisoned in the botanical gardens for public entertainment, one of the great imaginative leaps by Grandville, full of verve and inventiveness.
A good copy, fresh and without spotting.

Contemporary Romantic publisher's navy blue paper boards, spine with gilt decorative motifs, a few repairs to head and foot of some joints, illustrated covers, yellow paper pastedowns and endpapers, a few endpapers soiled, all edges gilt.
With a general frontispiece, 14 vignettes (one repeated) and 320 plates, all woodcut.

New edition, illustrated with 150 drawings by Riou. Catalog GK in fine. The later editions of this carton will possess 6 color prints, which will be simple enlargement colorized prints already present in black and white.
Cartonnage editor said "the portrait glued" to the signed Souze plate and connected by Lenègre. Back to the lighthouse. second board Lenègre like "e". Belle top plate. Slight discolouration under the cartridge of the author's name. A slightly emerged slip. A notebook is off from the inside. Rubbed corners and slightly bent. Back a little past but net gold and colors. Headdresses and rubbed folded. Second course with dirt, but good enough. Few scattered spots on a fresh paper.
Good copy.

First edition of the 212 full-page wood engravings by Gavarni (with the exception of the final four, executed by Bertall), together with 800 wood-engraved vignettes within the text.
Contemporary romantic bindings in half red shagreen, spines with four raised bands finely decorated with triple gilt panels and gilt arabesques, red paper-covered boards, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, corners a trifle rubbed.
The volume features a remarkable diversity of typographical elements, including elaborate text borders and tailpieces.
Gavarni’s captioned and satirical wood engravings offer a strikingly abundant illustrative display—almost a precursor to the comic strip.

Le Diable à Paris is an extraordinary and quintessentially Romantic work, gathering texts by illustrious contributors (Balzac’s "philosophy of married life"; Musset’s "Mimi Pinson"...) and graced with copious illustrations. This type of publication followed the immense success of the Physiologies, which humorously depicted the manners and characters of Parisians both in spirit and appearance. The first volume opens with a history of Paris by Lavallée, and the second with a geography of Paris (ending with Parisian statistics). This portrait of the capital is of particular interest, as it predates the sweeping transformations Paris would undergo under the Second Empire.
