Lenègre, polychrome front cover signed Engel featuring the title in a black and gilt fan, multiple black and gilt frames, a gilt elephant head in the upper left corner, three small illustrations and various gilt navigation and exploration instruments, all framed within green foliage, back cover of type "i" as indicated by Jauzac, spine decorated with several colored and gilt illustrations, all edges gilt.
Spine somewhat faded with rubbing at headcaps. Blue endpapers replaced.
Les Naufragés du Jonathan takes place on Hoste Island, from 1881 to 1893, near Cape Horn and tells the adventures of a group of shipwrecked people numbering about a thousand who find themselves on this island; the man who saved them, Kaw-Djer, becomes or becomes again their leader with each crisis that befalls this population.

Editor Cardboard both cobalt blue elephant (as the name of Roethel). Souze signed plate. Binding signed Lenègre on the second flat (type b. with its octagonal badge cold) with a star, mark the First printinging from 1878. Beautiful top plate with minimal defects = slightly folded corner, rubbing along with loss color. Back in good condition, without discoloration but probably restored tail, with small white spots. The second course, besides a few scratches and friction was taken to the bottom right corner, with refill (probably an old wetness). pale scattered spots.
Adventure novel dedicated to the issue of slavery, especially the slave trade by Africans themselves. This is one of the best stories of Verne, where a narrative is the most successful.

Contemporary uniform half dark blue polished calf by Simier, relieur du Roi, spines in compartments with blindstamped decoration, fillets, compartments and gilt motifs.

This set is illustrated – as well as the 34 vignettes of the Furne edition engraved on steel after drawings by Raffet, Johannot, Colin and Louis Boulanger – with 48 further illustrations, including an engraving by Devéria of the Odes and Ballads, an engraved title for the Autumn Leaves (1831), the lithographic frontispiece by Charlet for Hernani, that of the King Entertains Himself from the 1832 Renduel edition by Tony Johannot, and the original frontispieces for Lucrezia Borgia (1833) and Queen Mary of England by Célestin Nanteuil, as well as the 21 plates of the Perrotin de Notre Dame de Paris edition (1844), and so on.
A rare set, partly first editions, rich with engravings important to Hugo's work and remarkably bound by Simier.

Binders half red shagreen with corners, back with five nerves set with gold threads adorned with triple gilded boxes decorated in angles of black romantic arabesques, dates and golden friezes tails, marbled paper plates, guards and contreplats of handmade paper, three blankets and spine preserved (four courses with small marginal gaps), an upper corner of the third volume blunt, golden head.
Our copy is enriched with an autograph note signed by Victor Hugo Mery, brother of novelist Joseph Mery: "Dear Mery, thank your brother I will write it after reading it, but before I speak to the minister as I tell you.. Luther to Melanchthon: frater tuus frater meus, you Victor Hugo Friday 29. "..
The autograph ticket is mounted on tab and placed at the head of the third volume and accompanied by a bookseller description tag mounted on the ticket foot tab.

Cardboard editor connected by Lenègre; special plaque by Souze. Cardboard told the silvery banner, or the ball to the rare purple. The cardboard was used only for the triple volume Sandorf.
Beautiful first plate, the external beveled brod cleared. spine uniformly irradiated. A cut in the rear of the upper joint of 2cm. Second course with small white spots. Bottom right hand corner blunt. Good condition inside without freckles. Despite the obvious defects, desirable copy for its beautiful color combination, silver on a purple background.
Sandorf is dedicated posthumously to Alexandre Dumas. Jules Verne tribute indeed in this novel the author of the Count of Monte Cristo ("In this book, I tried to Matthias Sandorf the Monte Cristo Extraordinary Voyages."); Sandorf was imprisoned and betrayed like him and his adventures retrace his revenge. The novel is set in the Mediterranean region of southern Europe.
