First French edition, translated from the third English edition (Sabin, 30036.).

Each volume features a steel-engraved frontispiece.

Covers soiled, front boards detached, minor losses and tears to board margins, some foxing, cracked spines with losses; our copy in wrappers is housed in a modern brown full-cloth slipcase.

The second volume also includes a section on "Passage to Montreal and Quebec" (pp. 317-342) and "The Character of the Canadians" (pp. 331-332, 339-342).

Manuscript ex-libris signed Delecey de Mécourt on the front covers.

First edition, first issue, illustrated with an engraved frontispiece printed on mounted China paper and 120 wood-engraved plates by Grandville. From 1839 onwards, subsequent printings incorporated the wood engravings within the text and the frontispiece was printed on ordinary paper. Two issues were published by Fournier in 1838. The first issue may be identified by the captions to the engravings ending with a full stop; on page XIII of the Life of Aesop, the capital letter N is formed of looping lines, whereas in the second issue it is composed of small black-and-white squares. Half brown sheep bindings, smooth spines decorated with black and gilt fillets, gilt friezes at head and tail of spines, marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, marbled edges, Romantic bindings.
Light rubbing to some boards, two tears to the lower headcap and top edge of the fourth volume, some minor foxing.

Half red straight-grained morocco binding with corners signed Blanchetière at the top of the first endpaper. Smooth spine decorated with a large mirror tool and roulettes. Separating fillets on the boards. Very fresh copy, uncut, however some brown spots on Le carrosse du saint sacrement.

Very handsome copy.

Half-shagreen binding of the late 19th century. Smooth spine decorated with repeated romantic tooling, title and date in gilt. Top edge gilt. Spine uniformly sunned. Light scattered foxing. 

Bookplate with crowned cipher, Alfred and Blanche de Curzon.  Alfred de Curzon was a French painter, deceased in 1895.

Illustrated frontispiece, 36 colored illustrations and 146 in-text woodcuts in black.

Contemporary binding in blue half glazed calf, sunned spine with gilt arabesques, small holes at foot of spine, marbled paper boards, mould made endpapers and flyleaves, speckled edges. 
This exuberant and prodigious production of Grandville and Delord (whose name is printed at the bottom of page 292), judged by its contemporaries as already being mad, was rediscovered by the Surrealists.
