Very rare first edition.

This printing does not include the two maps later added by the publisher in the second issue, intended to illustrate the itinerary for readers who had not acquired the atlas (corresponding to plates XVIII and XXIV of the atlas), cf. Hage Chahine 3995. Röhricht 480-481. Chadenat 1712.

The text volume is largely unopened and includes one full-page plate.

The atlas volume, housed in a red full-cloth box and slipcase, is complete with all 27 plates (numbered I to XXVI, XVIII [bis]; plates XIX-XX are printed on a single sheet).

A very fine and rare copy in its original condition.

First edition of this splendid lithographed album by A. Bayot, Eugène Cicéri, and Morel Fatio, comprising a lithographed title on a tinted background, a line-engraved map by Avril, and 15 color lithographs on tinted grounds.

Contemporary black half shagreen binding with corners, spine with five raised bands and blind-stamped double fillets, cherry-red shagreen title label (with minor losses) mounted on the upper cover, black paper-covered boards, white moiré silk endpapers and pastedowns, endpapers slightly foxed and creased, all edges gilt, the binding recently restored.

Scattered foxing, a few faint marginal dampstains, one stain at the head of the final plate.

Second edition, partly original as it is considerably expanded (cf. Sabin 59254, Howes 7805, F. Monaghan 1171).

In fact, this pamphlet was intended as the first of a series, hence the general title; however, only this installment was ever published. The secondary title specifies the subject of the volume: "Relation d'une excursion de Bône à Guelma et à Constantine, par sir Grenville Temple et le chevalier Falbe, délégués de la société établie à Paris pour l'exploration de Carthage. Premier fascicule de l'ouvrage, accompagné d'un recueil d'inscriptions et de quatre planches représentant des monumens antiques, des mosaïques et des peintures à fresque découvertes à Carthage."

The two archaeologists had in fact accompanied the French divisions during the second expedition to Constantine, and their account combines scholarly and military perspectives, characteristic of the early period of French colonization in Algeria.

Provenance: Copy from Honoré-Théodoric d'Albert, 8th Duke of Luynes (1802–1867), with the bookplate of the Château de Dampierre affixed to a pastedown.

Second edition; the first having been destroyed by the author himself. Cf. Half calf bindings in light brown, smooth spines decorated with double gilt fillets, black morocco title and volume labels, a small hole at the foot of the spine of the first volume, marbled paper boards, upper corners slightly rubbed, sprinkled edges, contemporary bindings; the atlas volume is in original wrappers.

Some minor losses and small tears to the corners of the atlas, which also shows light restorations.

The latter is complete with its large folding map with coloured boundaries and its ten lithographed plates: eight views and two hand-coloured costume plates.

The eight picturesque views depict scenes near Jönköping, Stockholm, Rosendal, Drottningholm, Ornös (Arendt Pehrson’s house), Falun (the opening of the mine), Wexiö, and Solfvitsborg; the two remaining plates show Dalarna costumes at Leksand and Småland costumes at Wörend.

Some scattered foxing.

The English geographer Hugh Murray [1779-1846] devoted many years to enlarging and completing this work begun by the English orientalist John Leyden [1775-1811].

Prince Emmanuel Mikhailovich Galitzine or Golitsyn (1804–1853) was a member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society.

This account of Admiral Pierre Martin (1752-1820) was published by his grandson, Denis Pouget (1808-1892), through his only daughter Marguerite. It notably discusses the fire-ship affair off the Île d’Aix, a naval battle between the British and the French which took place on 11–12 April 1809 during the Fifth Coalition, and which led to the Admiral’s near-permanent disgrace.

First edition of the most significant 19th-century scientific expedition to Iceland and Greenland.

A few light spots of foxing, otherwise a very good copy.

Very rare first edition of this publication by the young Belgian Orientalist Eugène-Vincent-Stanislas Jacquet (1811-1838), whose career was as swift as it was promising, but tragically cut short by tuberculosis.

Third volume of the Voyages, relations et mémoires originaux pour servir à l'histoire de la découverte de l'Amérique, edited by Henri Ternaux-Compans.

This is the first French version of Hans Staden's account, a native of Homburg in Hesse, originally published in German in Marburg in 1557 (one small quarto volume). De Bry later translated it into Latin and included it in his Collection of Great Voyages.

Staden recounts his journey to Brazil, where he stayed from 1547 to 1555, and describes in detail the customs and way of life of the Tupinambá people among whom he was held captive.

Rare first edition of this important geographical and ethnographic account, intended to provide insight into the conflict between the Afghans and the British, the latter seeking to protect their Indian frontiers from the threat posed by the Russian Empire (cf. Bourquelot V, 637).

This copy retains the folding map bound at the end of the volume: "Carte pour l'intelligence des voyages d'Alexandre Burnes".

Spine faded with small losses, boards lightly soiled at the margins, paper loss to the lower left corner of the half-title page, some scattered foxing.

The author based his work on Elphinstone’s account, whose second edition appeared in 1838, as well as the narratives of Burnes, Forster, and Masson.

Arbousset, a Protestant missionary and explorer, recounts the discovery of the Mont des Sources and offers vivid descriptions of the peoples among whom he lived: Bastaards or mixed-race communities, Hottentots, Bushmen, Kaffirs, etc.

Originally from Goin in Moselle and son-in-law of Linant de Bellefonds, Dr. Charles Cuny (1811–1858) spent nearly his entire career in Egypt as a military surgeon, after being dismissed from Algeria.

Gustave Flaubert and Maxime Du Camp, who met him during their celebrated journey, mention him in their respective travel accounts. He died of dysentery during the expedition to Darfur that he had sponsored in 1857. Cf. Roy (Hippolyte): La Vie héroïque et romantique du Docteur Charles Cuny (Nancy, 1930).

Our copy is extra-illustrated with an autograph note signed by Jean-Baptiste Jomard (1780–1868), brother of Edme, addressed to Malte-Brun and dated 13 August 1867: "... c'est un vrai et grand service que vous avez rendu à l'histoire de la Recherche. Les Annales sont maintenant enrichies de ce morceau important... Il faut fairer une bonne mention de ce courageux, de cet intelligent voyageur..."

The only edition of this very rare short monograph, published as much in praise of Dunkirk as of Jean Bart. The second part bears its own title: Coup-d'oeil sur Dunkerque, sa population progressive depuis 1685 jusqu'en 1789, et le grand nombre de ses célèbres marins qui ont précédé et suivi Jean-Bart. A lawyer from Dunkirk, Louis-Eugène Poirier (1753–1818) came to notice after the fall of Robespierre for his vehement denunciation of the actions of Joseph Lebon at Arras.

A former professor at the Quebec Seminary and later Vicar General in Boston, Abbé Étienne Charles Brasseur de Bourbourg (1814–1874) traveled as a missionary to Mexico and Central America. He developed a keen interest in vanished civilizations and was appointed official archaeologist of the French expedition to Mexico in 1864.

"By turns archaeologist, ethnologist, historian, and linguist, Brasseur de Bourbourg, alongside Désiré Charnay, was one of the founders of Americanist studies in France in the mid-nineteenth century" (Numa Broc).

The hydrographer-engineer Vincendon-Dumoulin (1811–1858) accompanied Dumont d’Urville aboard the Astrolabe during his visit to Tahiti in September 1838, at the time of the French intervention on the island.

Beyond an opening chapter on colonisation in Oceania, the work comprises a geographical section and a historical one.

The first offers a description of the Leeward Islands (Maupiti, Bora-Bora, Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa), followed by the Windward Islands, including Tahiti.

The historical section, after several remarks on the institutions and customs of the inhabitants, recounts their history.

The table placed at the beginning of the volume provides a clear chronological sequence of events.

An appendix of 51 documents gathers the correspondence, notes, and reports exchanged by the representatives of France, England, and Pomaré in 1842–43.
