Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

  1. Tarutaran do TarasukonTarutaran do Tarasukon
    Alphonse DAUDET

Tarutaran do Tarasukon[Tarutaran do Tarasukon]. Tartarin of Tarascon]

    Ikubundo|Tokyo 1926|13.8 x 20 cm|Broché

Very rare first edition of the Japanese translation, accompanied by Taiichi Ogawa’s annotated commentary.

Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Alphonse Daudet.

Spine with two tears at head and foot, soiling to the wrappers, a few minor spots internally.

First Japanese edition of Alphonse Daudet’s masterpiece. Harshly received in Provence upon its publication in 1872, despite the support of Frédéric Mistral, the novel soon came to be regarded as one of the landmarks of French literature, and the character of Tartarin became the emblem—and finest ambassador—of the city of Tarascon.

Contemporary half havana sheep binding, corners tipped with the same, smooth spine sunned and rubbed, decorated with blind fillets and floral tools, blind-tooled garland framing the bordeaux cloth boards, black paper endpapers and pastedowns, marbled edges.

Some minor foxing mainly affecting the endpapers, otherwise a clean and well-preserved copy.

    Hokusai Manga. Volume 5

    Edo [Tokyo] • [Tokyo] 1816|15.50 x 22.50 cm|cousu
Rare first edition, fifth volume of Hokusai's Mangas or Sketch Books. 15 volumes were published between 1815 and 1878, the fifth volume contains approximately 30 subjects, most on double pages in black, grey and flesh tones.
Accordion-fold volume, bound with stitching, black cover, some creasing to board edges, rubbing and small lacks. The red printed label is lacking to this copy. The first and last pages detached from boards. Creases, small lacks and discolouration to boards. Minor soiling.

Héros légendaires de la Chine et du Japon. Wakan Eiyu Gaden

    Gyokusandô|Edo [Tokyo] 1860|15.50 x 23 cm|2 volumes cousus
The rare first edition, complete in 2 volumes. The first volume contains a colored frontispiece and 13 double-page plates. The second volume has 12 double-page plates and a black frontispiece. All plates are in black and grey wash. The volumes are undated but note a location: Nihonbashi dori, the bridge avenue in Edo. They bear the name of Ichiyusai, one of Kuniyoshi's first artistic names. The date is therefore indicative and has been determined according to various criteria; however, according to the preface, the books were in production at the time of Kuniyoshi's death and the frontispiece of the second volume is the work of Utagawa Sadahide. One of the master's last works in which he...

    Hokusai manga. Volume 14

    Eirakuya Toshiro|Edo [Tokyo] [Tokyo] 1849|15.60 x 22.60 cm|cousu
Rare first edition, translated as "Croquis de Hokusaï", volume 14. 15 volumes were actually published covering Hokusaï's work. The first was published in 1815 and the last posthumously in 1878. The final volume is considered apocryphal by some art historians. The 30 double-leaf volume contains around 39 engravings, 12 of which are double-page spreads, including many animated landscapes, real and mythological animals. There are 3 colors: beige, gray and black. It is difficult to determine wether it is a first or a later print run, as this detail made no difference in Japanese book collecting. The publisher reprinted volumes as needed. We do know, however, that the publisher produced several...

    SO SHISEKI

    So shiseki gafu

    Suhara Yashiroemon|Edo [Tokyo] 1765|16 x 26.50 cm|cousu
Collection of drawings by So Shiseki. The date 1765 is the only date found in the collection, but it is not impossible that the work is a 19th-century reprint, as Japan had a very different concept from ours concerning authenticity and originality, including ancient temples that were rebuilt identically once they became dilapidated. The Waseda Library, the most important in Japan, possesses a copy with the same characteristics. However, bookmaking techniques in Japan were not different in the 18th and 19th centuries; there was no break, and this view is Western. 31 prints including 12 double-page.
Accordion volume, bound with stitching, on mulberry paper. Chocolate honeycomb cover...

    Unsōdō Gōshi Kaisha|Tokyo 1936|27 x 40 cm|une feuille
Original color print signed with the seal of the artist Suiko. In the left margin appears in Japanese the title, the year and apparently the address of the printing house. On the back of the mount we find the artist's seal, the place and publisher, the artist himself.
A sheet attached by 2 points of glue to a mount.
It was in 1936 (Showa 11) that Fukuda Suiko printed a series of 10 flower prints. The particular climate of the time, as Japan invaded China, led to the destruction of most of the collections, and only a few rare isolated original prints can now be found.
