    The rare first edition of these two volumes published two years apart, the continuation of which would never see the light of day. With one frontispiece and one large folding genealogical chart.
    Copy with the arms of Louis XV stamped on the boards, and his cipher repeated on the spine, a presentation copy.
    Contemporary full marbled brown calf bindings. Spine with raised bands decorated with Louis XV's cipher repeated four times with angular fleurs-de-lys. Red morocco title and volume labels. Armorial boards. Triple gilt fillet frame on boards. Headcaps restored. Several splits along the upper joint of volume I and volume II. Corners and certain areas of the leading edges restored. Lacking the right corner of the first endpaper. Very faint dampstain trace in margin extending onto text from page 217 to the end; from page viiij to xxxviij in margin; similarly on the rear endpapers of volume II. Despite the mentioned defects, a rare copy with the arms and cipher of Louis XV.
    The work contains a long introduction that clarifies Chevalier d'Arcq's project as a historian. His critical method of examining texts is scrupulous, he rejects what is not proven and openly aligns himself with the most reliable hypotheses. This method and his work were praised by Le Journal des scavants which reviewed the first book in 1756 then the second in 1758, with numerous compliments, notably on the author's elegant style and his way of creating a vividly colored narrative from stark facts. Beyond history and geography, the author seeks the essentially military aspect and shows how wars, between victories and defeats, have shaped the geography of peoples, and precipitated the end and birth of kingdoms. Volume I deals with Greater and Lesser Armenia (Cappadocia, etc.), the second with the kingdoms around Pontus (Phrygia, Paphlagonia, Heraclea, Pergamon...). Although the work treats a rare ancient history and its reading is fascinating, the book did not meet with success, and the editorial project was not carried through to completion.

    A curiosity. The author's research into military tactics led him to establish this military history of the wars between Siam and Cochinchina (Vietnam and Thailand). The book contains a history of these two countries as well as a description of their geography. Lo de Radelet also focuses on describing the military formations, strategies and war machines employed by both sides, as well as the history of their heroes. Most strange is the knowledge that the protagonists have of European wars and notably of Antiquity, knowledge that must be attributed to the author. Lo de Radelet's model, which he cites in his preface, is Xenophon's Cyropaedia, from which the author seems to borrow the narrative structure.
    Lo de Radelet obtained the rank of colonel in the Swedish army. He then entered French service, but renouncing military glory and after being wounded twice, he retired to devote himself to studies of military tactics and philosophy.

The first English edition appeared in 1738 under the title A compleat system of opticks. Additions supplement Smith's work on optical discoveries that have been made since publication.

    The most important and complete treatise on optics of the 18th century. It is both a popular work of popularization and a scientific treatise and consists of distinct parts. The first, entitled Popular Treatise is a summary of all optical phenomena with its experiments; the second part is an application of geometry in the theory of light and optics, the third section of the work is a treatise on mechanics applied to optics and intended mainly for artisans with processes for making mirrors, lenses, camera obscuras, polished glasses... The fourth part is a history of astronomy and its discoveries. It should be noted that for the author, light has a corpuscular character despite Newton's doubts on this subject.

    Journey that begins at Lake Maggiore in Duomo d'Ossola, a small town on the Italian border in 1817 and ends in 1818 at Suse, near Turin. Beyond the interest of the journey to Sicily and Etna, to Pompeii and Herculaneum, the entire journey shines with certain political resonances, since it was made in the aftermath of the Empire and at the dawn of the Italian revolutions. Desp. de B. à M. le chevalier de ***. The histoire des ouvrages [...] was inserted for the first time in the third edition, and was expanded in the fourth. The booksellers have added extracts from journals on Desprez de Boissy's work. La lettre sur les spectacles is followed by that of Monsieur de Campigneulle on Desprez de Boissy's work.
      Contemporary full red morocco bindings. Decorated spine with raised bands. Red morocco title and volume labels. Triple gilt rule frame on covers. Edges gilt. Slight lack at head of volume II. Spine of volume II faded. 4 corners slightly bumped. pp. 180 to 190 in volume I, large brown stain, otherwise copy relatively fresh. Handsome copy in contemporary morocco.
      Rational and reasoned criticism not only against theater and shows but especially against the frequentation and pleasures one seeks there. The work by the Jansenist lawyer Despez de Boissy takes its place in a vast quarrel that extended throughout the second half of the 18th century regarding education and good morals and the pernicious roles of shows and particularly of theater in relation to these. The second volume is particularly interesting for the history of theater and public theaters, as well as shows, and provides a valuable bibliography.

Volume II begins at pagination xx, without lack and in conformity with copies held by the National Library of Scotland, and by the Zoological Society of London. Handsome copy.
      Gmelin, as botanist and chemist of the Academy of Sciences, was sent to explore Siberia by Empress Anne with numerous other scientists as part of a vast governmental exploration project, and the voyages took place between 1733 and 1743. Keralio, in an interesting preface, notably on the deformation of Russian names, admits having deliberately reduced the original to 2 volumes, the author's exhaustive journal spread over 10 years being very tedious, he therefore concentrated on descriptions and everything relating to the voyage itself (mines, peoples, customs, food...) by classifying the voyage by explanatory chapters, the themes thus being easily found through the table. The voyage is completed by a history of Russian navigations and discoveries in the glacial and northern sea of the south (Kamchatka), with Bering's navigations. The work undoubtedly forms a very precious source of information on Siberia.
      In his account, Gmelin did not neglect to make known the physical and moral character, the religious practices and habits of the different peoples of the vast region of Siberia, but he applied himself more particularly still to describing the mines and foundries which are the principal wealth of this country, and he did so as a scholar initiated in this field.
