Commander Fernel (1793-1854) was attached to the general staff of the African army; he recounts in this work with legitimist tendencies the history of the taking of Algiers. The last chapter is devoted to the particularities of the region: date palms, sugar cane, pomegranates, camels... This campaign, as we know, would have considerable repercussions on the French presence in North Africa. At the end, the copy has been extra-illustrated with the section of L'Univers pittoresque on Algiers, written by Rozet, captain of engineers, which contains 7 steel-engraved plates.

He who was considered the greatest theologian of his time came from a Berber family, and was moreover the first theologian from North Africa. He died around 220 in Carthage, but was never canonized by the church since he joined a heretical movement, the Montanists, at the end of his life. His work is remarkable; it is with him, truly, that Latin theology begins, and the thought of the Trinity, of which he employs the term for the first time. He thus affirms the unity of God in three persons, and that Christ is both God and man, composed of 2 substances. This theological thought, as we know, would have an immense future. His treatises address different subjects: On Patience, On the Flesh of Christ, On the Resurrection, On the Soul, Against the Jews, On the Trinity... Among them are found a certain number of polemical works.

The single species designates communion by bread or wine. It was in 1681 that Pierre Jurieu published his treatise on communion in a single species in the name of Protestantism. One year later, Bossuet wrote a rigorous treatise proving by certain causes that the church practiced the Eucharist under one or two species without anyone ever thinking that the withdrawal of one or the other harmed the integrity of the sacrament. The author shows that there is nothing indispensable in the sacraments except what pertains to their substance; that thus one is not obliged to do in administering them everything that the Savior did in instituting them. The Treatise on Communion, says Bayle, "appeared to me very delicate, very spiritual, and of a courtesy toward us that cannot be praised enough; tight, judicious, it is cleared of everything that does not bear on the question." It nonetheless results that Bossuet was subsequently attacked by several Protestant writings, and that there was in the 17th century a veritable quarrel around this practical question of the sacrament.

Before composing this ensemble, several editions were published: in the first place an Introduction to the history of Dannemarc in 1755, which forms in our copy the first illustrated volume of a large folding map of Scandinavia. Two volumes in 4 will appear a few years later, then a third. The story was then continued until 1720, then until 1773 in this edition.

The book is considered the best ancient history of Denmark, it is indeed extensively documented, and contains in addition a study of mythology and the 33 fables of what composes the Edda, as well as other epics. Before the historical narration, the first two volumes are an anthropological approach of Denmark, addressing the specificity of this country as much by its geographical location as by its customs and its mythology. The author lived for a long time in Denmark and was tutor to the reigning prince, at the same time as he was a professor at the Royal College of Copenhagen.
