Piron, Alexis (1689-1773)

Alexis PIRON

Écrivain français, auteur de pièces de théâtre, de poèmes, de contes, de chansons et d’épigrammes. Il écrit des tragédies, des comédies, ainsi que de nombreux opéras-comiques. Son "Ode à Priape" servit de prétexte pour lui refuser l’entrée à l’Académie française.
Auteur de deux pièces pour marionnettes, "Le Mariage de Momus ou la Gigantomachie" (1722) et "Colombine Nitétis" (1723). Des marionnettes apparaissent aussi dans deux de ses pièces pour acteurs : Polichinelle dans <em>Arlequin-Deucalion" (1722) et une grande marionnette habitée dans "L’Endriague</em> (1723).
Selon les frères Parfaict, un autre opéra-comique, "Tirésias" (1722), parfois appelé "La Vengeance de Tirésias", aurait d’abord été joué par des marionnettes de taille humaine avant de l’être par les acteurs de la troupe. C’est sans doute une erreur : cette indication figure dans leur "Dictionnaire des théâtres de Paris" (volume 5, 1756, p. 465) mais, dans un ouvrage précédent ("Mémoires pour servir à l’histoire des spectacles de la Foire par un acteur forain", volume 2, 1743, p. 8), les deux historiens l’évoquaient à propos de la pièce suivante de Piron, "Le Mariage de Momus", jouée en septembre 1722. "Tirésias" est une pièce écrite pour les acteurs de la troupe de Francisque, et en premier lieu pour leur Arlequin, Francisque lui-même, qui excellait dans les changements de sexe et les rôles en travesti.

    New edition for Les fils ingrats by Piron. Mahomet by Voltaire is the very rare counterfeit published the same year as the original. First edition of La Mérope françoise, avec quelques petites pieces de litterature, and of L'ecole des meres by Crébillon. La Lettre a M. Norberg is a new edition.
    Contemporary glazed brown full calf binding. Spine with raised bands richly decorated. Red morocco title-label. 2 wormholes at head. Joint cracked at upper joint at foot, same at lower joint. Corners heavily bumped and worn. One black stain on upper board at foot. First title page bearing multiple crossed-out signatures. Trace of pale dampstain from p. 42 to 46, then from 65 to 113.

    Half glazed blonde calf bindings, mid-19th century. Smooth spines richly decorated with urn tools and roulettes. Red shagreen title and volume labels. Light rubbing to head and edges on some volumes. Very fresh set overall. A very handsome copy.
    Complete theatrical works of Piron, tales, and pieces in verse and prose. The author began his career with epigrams and witticisms (a talent found again in the Tales), then turned to comedy, working for the comic opera and the théâtre de la Foire. His tragedies, although they attempt to renew a moribund genre of the time, are not his best efforts. Piron produced the play that remains his masterpiece in 1738: La métromanie, of which Grimm said it would endure as long as there is theater and taste in France.

    Some rubbing, otherwise a handsome copy.
    Author of numerous comedies and epigrams which he had made a true specialty, often against the authors of his time, notably Fréron and Voltaire. Many of his plays were successful, notably his greatest, La métromanie, of which Grimm said it would live as long as there is theater and taste in France. He also wrote libertine poetry which caused him not to be retained by the Académie Française.
