The most complete collective edition of the works of Alexis Piron, edited by Rigoley de Juvigny. Portrait of the author at the beginning of the first volume, engraved on copper by Augustin de Saint-Aubin after Caffieri. As is very often the case, the eighth volume, containing the Œuvres badines, is not included here. A full-margined copy. Title pages in red and black. Half glazed blonde calf bindings, mid-19th century. Smooth spines richly decorated with urn tools and roulettes. Red shagreen title and volume labels. Light rubbing to head and edges on some volumes. Very fresh set overall. A very handsome copy. Complete theatrical works of Piron, tales, and pieces in verse and prose. The author began his career with epigrams and witticisms (a talent found again in the Tales), then turned to comedy, working for the comic opera and the théâtre de la Foire. His tragedies, although they attempt to renew a moribund genre of the time, are not his best efforts. Piron produced the play that remains his masterpiece in 1738: La métromanie, of which Grimm said it would endure as long as there is theater and taste in France.
