Nicknamed at 21 "the youngest editor in the world", Claude Aveline would publish from 1922, thanks to André Gide and Georges Duhamel, some fifty works. In 1934, he would engage in politics, alongside Henri Barbusse and Romain Rolland, in the anti-fascist movement then, from August 1940, in the Resistance first in Paris then in the free zone where he would miraculously escape arrest by the Gestapo in April 1944.

["It is a film inspired by one of my books and I must be there between June 5th and 9th to participate in this work..."]

Born in New Caledonia, Alin Laubreaux was a writer and journalist principally known for his theatrical reviews published in the ultra-collaborationist, anti-Semitic and fascist newspaper Je suis partout.
Hated by a good part of the Parisian artistic milieu, he was publicly slapped in June 1941 by Jean Marais whom he had called "l'homme au Cocteau entre les dents" after having savaged the playwright's latest play La machine à écrire. The scene was freely adapted by Louis Malle in his Dernier Métro. Alin Laubreaux was also accused of having played a significant role in the arrest by the Gestapo, then in the deportation of poet Robert Desnos whom he execrated and who had also slapped him some years earlier. At the Liberation, he fled to Spain and was sentenced to death in absentia in 1947.

The first edition published in a small number of copies by Pierre Mac Orlan under a pseudonym, with no mention of deluxe copies.

Indeed, our copy is enriched with an original watercolour dated, signed and dedicated by Chas-Laborde to Louis Theuveny, depicting a madame pimp and five of her girls lined up like toy soldiers in light clothing with bare breasts.
This original watercolour is mounted on guards and placed before the illustration on page 12 which is in its reproduction.
