André Durand (1807–1867), an archaeological artist, watercolorist, and lithographer, took part in the archaeological expeditions of Prince Demidoff as a correspondent for the Comité des travaux historiques.
This series of drawings depicting various sites and monuments on the island of Elba, lithographed by Durand and E. Cicéri, serves as a kind of prelude to the Album de Toscane published the following year.
Durand dedicated it to Prince Demidoff who, having acquired the estate of San Martino—where Napoleon resided during his exile—founded there a monumental museum in memory of the imperial era.
The introductory text was written by Auguste de Sainson, the museum's curator.
